Rolling Stones Signed Guitar to Help Raise Funds for Dog River Howlers Fundraiser to Support Those Fleeing Domestice Violence

What do rock, country and the Napa Valley have in common?

Each will be showcased Feb. 8 during live or silent auctions at the Bowties & Sweethearts Valentine’s Gala, a fundraiser for the Leader-Post Christmas Cheer Fund, which supports four Regina shelters for women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

The Mosaic Company, the event’s presenting sponsor, donated a Rolling Stones guitar, autographed by all band members, as well as a 2012 Craven Country Jamboree guitar, autographed by the performing artists that year, including Alan Jackson and Brad Paisley,

“We often, when we see something kind of unique like this when we’re out and about, we will purchase it and then donate it to another community event, so they can use it to raise money,” explained Sarah Fedorchuk of The Mosaic Company.

Mosaic also donated a Napa Valley epicurean adventure, which includes a cooking class, private wine tasting, three-course lunch for two; a three-hour gourmet dinner for two on the Napa Valley wine train; a private olive oil estate tour and tasting for two; three nights at the Meritage Resort and Spa, and airfare for two.

While she wouldn’t venture a guess how much the auction items might raise for local shelters, Fedorchuk said “We’re just hoping that this year’s gala hits a new record.”

In addition to donating auction items, Mosaic has been a major bidder at the Valentine’s gala in the past. For example, in 2012 the company bid $10,000 for a Dog River painting by Regina visual artist Ladd Fogerty. The painting now hangs in the Mosaic tower.

“It’s definitely a nice reminder of our involvement in the event and how far that event has developed and become such a showcase for the Regina community,” she said.

“Mosaic really likes to make those local community investments. We really loved how the Leader-Post (Christmas) Cheer Fund was sponsoring women’s shelters. It was something we haven’t given to before, and this allowed us to support them and bring recognition in the community to the work they do,” Fedorchuk said.

“An event like this is only successful if everyone rallies around and makes it a priority. And we’ve been very lucky, ” she said, praising those “who have come to the table in a big way.”

In its first three years, the Bowties & Sweethearts gala raised over $230,000 for the Christmas Cheer Fund, pointed out Tracy Fahlman, a member of the event’s organizing committee.

The event was started in 2010 by members of the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club. Club members Karl Fix and Tim Young, recognizing a special need in the community, organized a volunteer team to create the posh fundraiser. The duo continue to sit on the organizing committee, which has expanded over the years to include new community leaders, Fahlman pointed out. In addition to Fix (event chair), Young (Young’s Equipment) and Fahlman (Regina Hotel Association), this year’s committee also includes Fedorchuk (The Mosaic Company), Marla Preston (Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan), Tim Wicijowski (CIBC Wood Gundy), Tim Schaefer (Varsity Homes Ltd.), Denis Jones (Deveraux Homes and Development), Kevin Knight (Knight Automotive Group), Kevin Tell (Cindercrete Products Ltd.), Robert Banderhooft (Greystone Managed Investments Inc.), Marnel Jones (The Mosaic Group), Melynda Loder (Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan) and Anne Ottmann (Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan).

The debut gala raised $45,000. Last year’s event raised $115,000.

“We’re hoping to exceed last year,” an optimistic Fahlman said.

This year’s gala will include gourmet cuisine by Chef Milton Rebello of the Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan. The menu includes an artisan bread platter and antipasto, duo of duck and foie gras, lobster bisque, truffle foam and lobster thermidor, beef tenderloin, brandied chanterelles and wild mushrooms, micro vegetables and a chocolate trio.

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by Buffalo Narrows and Zenaya Semple. Frogsback performs at the after party.

The event is by invitation, with tables of 10 going for $3,000. About 85 to 90 per cent of tables are sold to returning guests, Fahlman estimated.

Numerous Howlers Players Have Come From Shawnigan Lake School Rugby Program

"When a school demands from you and insists on higher standards of behaviour, smartness, endurance, honesty, hard work and results, you can feel that such a school is worth belonging to and you can be proud of it."
- Derek Hyde-Lay, iconic Shawnigan coach and teacher

Shawnigan’s long-standing tradition in rugby embraces life’s lessons of hard work, commitment, team work, camaraderie and humbleness in both victory and defeat. As six-time Provincial Champions (1998, 2009-2013), our program supports our mission statement that emphasizes the “pursuit of personal excellence.” A very talented coaching staff made up of Provincial and National-level coaches provide challenging practices, game analysis, and opportunities to tour outside of North America. Each year we graduate players that go on to play Varsity rugby at universities in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.

The Shawnigan rugby experience begins in grade 8 and culminates at the Senior 1st XV level. In order for a student to progress to the top level they must be highly motivated and hard working. Complementing our program is a Human Performance course taken during the academic day that emphasizes strength training, flexibility, and nutritional education. Our facilities are second to none and offer Olympic weights and a well-equipped cardio room. We also offer skills during the off season for those players who are looking towards a competitive season in the Spring. While many of our top athletes are involved in other sports it allows many of those relatively new to the game to improve their overall fitness and skill development.

During the Fall Term, our grade 8 and 9 boys play rugby and compete for the School while our grade 10 boys, senior girls and senior boys compete in the Spring Term. The competition includes Independent Schools, the local Public School leagues, and exhibition games with top schools in the lower mainland. Tours from across Canada, the U.K., the U.S. and “Down Under”, often come for friendly games and the building of friendships. Our teams frequently tour to various parts of the world during Spring Break.

The senior girls and senior boys compete annually at the Provincial Championships, held in late May and early June, and consistently finish in the top two in the Province.

From day one the emphasis for the Grade 9 rugby team was to have fun, enjoy being part of a team, and to learn the game of rugby. It did not take long for this group of internationally flavoured individuals (who knew very little about rugby) to transform into a team. The boys soaked up as much information about rugby as they could and seemed to enjoy the bus trips, practices, games, and spending time together as much as any group I have been a part of.

We focused on fitness, ball-handling skills, decision-making, tackling technique, team strategy and, of course, doing it all while having fun. The athletes learned multiple positions during the season as well as playing lots of games against other schools.

The season started off with a surprisingly strong showing in the exhibition game against Shawnigan Lake School followed by a few wins versus Mulgrave and a touring side, Crossely Heath, which was a very good display of rugby that showed signs of the potential these boys have. The team also had some tough loses during the season in the SMUS 7s tournament & against St Georges School, but these were a great learning experience as, despite the score, these boys never quit, showing grit right to the end. We finished off the season on a high note with a much-deserved win versus Mulgrave, which made for a fantastic bus ride home.

More important than the wins and loses is that all of these boys have been bitten by the rugby bug and have the passion for the sport, to be a part of a team, and to learn more about the game of rugby.

Mr. Shane Thompson, Coach
