Alberto Granado
Alberto Granado was a historic figure in Cuba who played rugby with Che Guevara in Argentina prior to to moving to Cuba after the revolution upon Che's invitation has died. An ardent rugby fan he became a friend of of the Dog River Howlers( see picture of him with his Howlers strip in the pictures section of the Howlers Facebook page) from their numerous trips to Cuba where he would always join us for a meal. I was fortunate enough to meet him on numerous occasions to enjoy some red wine with him and listen to his many interesting stories about the "Motercycle Diaries " trip along with the many other stories ( including rugby) about his friend Che who's nickname was the "Fuser" (for his aggressive style of play). A most interesting man who loved rugby, Cuba and his good friend "El Che".
The MVP award at the Havana Howlers Rugby 7's (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=150335699985), is called the Alberto Granado Award . In 2010 it was won by Cuban National Team captain DEULIS MARTINEZ
Alberto Granado (born on August 8, 1922 in Hernando, Córdoba, Argentina) is an Argentine-Cuban doctor, writer, and scientist. He was the travelling companion of Che Guevara during their trip around Latin America, and founder of the Santiago School of Medicine in Cuba. He has written at least one book, Travelling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary. The book also served as reference for the 2004 film, The Motorcycle Diaries (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u0U3dbVMHk), in which he was played by Rodrigo de la Serna, while Che Guevara was played by Gael Garcia Bernal. Alberto and “Che” also played rugby together in Cordoba.
