Letter to Howlers from Judah Campbell

The Dog River Howlers RFC along with it's board members and players donated some $5,000 to Judah Campbell Fund -
http://donate.rugbycanada.ca/e/judahcampbell

I am writing this letter to thank you for your donation in support of my recovery.

As you know on October 5, 2013 I suffered a fracture to my C4 & C5 vertebrae causing damage to my spinal cord during a rugby game. When I first arrived at the hospital that afternoon, I did not have any movement nor could I feel anything below my shoulders. I was placed in traction to relieve the pressure on my spinal cord. The following Tuesday I underwent surgery where the broken disc was removed and my vertebrae were fused together with a titanium plate. Also, the surgeon put in place rods and screws to further stabilize my spine.

On Friday November 8, 2013 I was discharged from Kelowna General Hospital and am now back at my parents house. I will be doing outpatient therapy at the hospital 2-3 times a week for rehabilitation. I am feeling very optimistic and encouraged with every passing day as I am seeing continued improvement. I know that I will have many months of physiotherapy and occupational therapy ahead of me.

I consider myself so blessed to be a part of a rugby community not only locally but worldwide. In this time of crisis I am so appreciative of the support that was rallied around my recovery. When the time comes I am excited to return to the game in whatever way I am able. Rugby will always be a huge part of my life.

Again, I thank you so much for your support and thoughts. I want you to know that even though it will be a long and unknown road to recovery, you made a big difference and words cannot express how truly grateful I am.

Sincerely,
Judah Campbell

The Mirmidones Rugby RC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mspRBlxnyrY)) (www.facebook.com/MirmidonesRC) has it's roots in Moravia Bario which once was Meddellin's garbage dump. Honorary Howler Damon Weigl from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada was instrumental in organizing this club as player and coach in 2011. Now they have some 100 members and play in the city's U-16 and U18 competitions. Damon along with some fellow rugby friends are heading back there in May of 2014 with 2 big bags from the Howlers that contain 10 balls, 200 jerseys,50 pair shorts, 75 t-shirts, 50 mouth guards and stacks of cones. Damon has again demonstrated we we Howlers say that "ITS MORE THAN A GAME, IT'S AWAY OF LIFE"

Howlers in Search for U-16 Boys and Girls Team Members for European International 7's Tourney

The Howlers have sent a U-16 boys team to the Heidelberg International Youth 7's the last 2 years. In 2012 we came in 3rd and this year 5th out of 12 teams which included National Teams from Holland, Romania and Morocco along with regional select sides from France (Toulon, Toulouse, Paris and Alsace Loraine) and Germany.

In 2014 the tournament (June 7 and has added a U-16 women's competition that the Howlers have also been invited to participate in.

A international competition like this can be an important first step in any aspiring young players' rugby career.

The Howlers will be taking nominations from rugby coaches across the country as part of the selection process for both the girls and boys teams. Please send these nominations to Karl Fix ([email protected]) along with a detailed rugby CV. Although this is a Canadian based team the Howlers also have a history of players from around the world so are in turn open to nominations of high level candidates from around the globe.

We of course are hoping Shane Thompson will again coach the boys team as he has for the last 2 years and Sandro Fiorini (Canada U-20 women's coach) has expressed an interest in coaching the girls if his schedule allows.

We would leave Canada on Monday June 1/ Tuesday June 2 and return Monday June 9.

The cost of the tour is as follows:
Flights are around $1,100 to $1300 (from across Canada) depending where you fly from .
The cost of 6 nights accommodations with breakfast along with a full Howlers playing and tour kit ( uniform along with tradition Howlers bowling, warm up , sleeveless shirts) is about $600.
Lunches, dinners and activities would come to about $250 or so.
So about a $2,000 trip all in.
