Today we remember our rugby brother Merv Popadynic and the other 179 who met their tragic death on October 12, 2002 in the terrorist Sari Club bombings while playing in the Bali International Rugby Tournament. "Swervin" Mervin was born in Wynard Saskatchewan on July 20, 1964. While attending The U of Saskatchewan he began playing for the Gophers RFC which in turn led to him representing Saskatchewan at both the U-19 and senior level. From there his work as an engineer took him to Calgary(played for the Irish) ,Turkmenistan,Texas,Alabama,Venezuela,Trinidad and finally Jakarta, Indonesia.
This will be the 10th year of his memorial game this year being played at the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club - 4334 18St. NE, Calgary Alberta, Canada tomorrow at 2:00 pm( October 13). There will be a game anyone can be part of( just bring your boots) with the traditional rugby celebration to follow. If you can't make it take a minute to in your own way remember Merv and everyone that died so tragically 10 years ago today.
I coached and then played with Merv and unquestionably for him it truly was "more than a game, it was a way of life"
I've attached some pictures of 2 of Merv's previous memorial games/celebrations that the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club (http://www.facebook.com/dogriverhowlers?fref=ts ) were involved in organizing.
