The Rugby Canada and Dog River Howlers (www.dogriverhowlers.com) We Stand on Guard for Thee campaign will be extended until Huggy’s fundraising goal has been met. Donations collected over the last six weeks recently surpassed the halfway mark, but because there is still almost $25,000 to go, both organizations have offered to keep the fundraising program open until the goal is met.
We’ve had outstanding support from rugby clubs, schools, national team members, the rugby community as well as Huggy’s family and friends. In a new show of support, other football genres have come on board and stepped up their support of the program as well.
Jim Hopson, CEO of the Saskatchewan Rough Riders Football Club in the CFL and honorary Howler, made a donation to the program noting “we are all brothers in "football" recognizing that the "grid iron" genre evolved from rugby.” Hopson was also instrumental in orchestrating three CFL half time 7's games last year in Saskatchewan, Calgary and BC last year.
Jon Ryan, punter for the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL and honorary Howler also supported Huggy’s efforts and encourages others to keep the wheels moving to help reach the $50,000 goal. Ryan stated, "I have seen firsthand in football the price some pay for playing the game you love. I have a high regard for anyone who still loves that game even though it dealt them a very hard blow. All the best Kerry".
Both of these men have not only helped with Huggy’s fundraising – they also support the Dog River Howlers through donations and speaking at fundraising events.
The online fundraising page http://donate.rugbycanada.ca/e/huggy will remain open and cheques can still be mailed in to the Rugby Canada office. As an extra incentive we will also continue to offer the We Stand on Guard for Thee paper prints for those making donations of $250 or more or canvas prints for donations of $500 or more. It would be great if we can reach this by the beginning of June and have the chance to announce our success and acknowledge the generous support of all those that gave at the Canada vs. Italy game in Toronto on June 15th.
