Influences:
---------
Tillman Briggs was a great mentor and influence on my early career, he coached me in High School, at James Bay, he also did stints as a Crimson tide, BC and National Team coach, and I was fortunate enough to play for him in all those situations. He believed in men and expected you to behave that way, he believed in courage, integrity, and hard work, and he set that example, he was an honourable man and I was proud to have know him.
Gary Johnston, and Ken Wilkie were excellent Canadian captains and hard men and I learned from them.
Great friends through the sport, too many to mention, had a real positive effect on my life. I would say that Spence McTavish and Ro Hindson feel like my brothers, and together we did some great things. I have 24 caps for Canada and Ro Hindson was my 2nd row partner in all of them. It still amazes me when I think of that.
When it comes to brothers, I have 4, Jim, John, Mike and Dick, we have all played for Vic High and James Bay, they had success in different sports at high levels and we all are still members of the James Bay Athletic Association.
Memorable Games:
---------------
There would be a few. James Bay's many victories in the Provincials, great tournament wins and victories over clubs like Dungannon.
BC's win over Scotland as captain was pretty special.
Cardiff's 17 to 9 loss to the All Blacks still sticks in my craw.
Canada's performance in the 1st WC was also something to be proud of. At the 1st WC I asked our men to focus completely on victory and so I didn't want anything to screw that up, I believed we needed a total commitment to really excel. I asked them to leave alcohol alone until after the last game and then we would have the biggest party yet. Years later I found out that a very few didn't share my belief and partied during the tour behind my back. I still wonder, if we had stayed the course, could we have done better in the close matches against Wales and Ireland in that first WC.
How did Rugby influence my life:
---------------------------
Travel, travel and more travel, I would have never had those opportunities without rugby.
Wonderful friends that I don't always see, but know we have a special bond, we certainly bled over those bonds.
Finally my wife and partner Stephanie White, a great player and supporter in her own right, I married someone who has captained more WC matches than I have and in the same sport.
Current Involvement.
-----------------
I volunteer. I am the President of the James Bay Athletic Association, a manager and fundraiser for the Crimson Tide, BC Rugby Union Board Member, and Manager of the current BCRU Rep side.
Work:
-----
I am a carpenter by trade, have a company that does small developments around Victoria, both sons work for me, Stephanie rules the books, although her real job is in management with Shell Oil. Son Thy has been a regular with the Canadian Men's 7's program, oldest son Jacob boxes in wooden shoes and is recovering from a serious knee injury and will be back on the pitch for JBAA in the spring. My 14 year old daughter Sophie rules, as a 13 year old, she played for U16 BC Girls Rugby, and U14 BC Girls basketball. She's a Peach!
Imput.
-----
Both Steph (my wife that also captained Canada's National Women's Team) and I have served on the RC Board for the 6 year terms and we take a lot of pride in what RC has done in the last 10 years both in Women and Men senior reps, 7's and 15's, our junior programs are flourishing. RC has to remember the clubs, the very base of your membership and grassroots, we tend to take the thousands of volunteer hours people put in for granted and need our imaginations to consider how we as a National Union can help those Clubs.
As for juniors and advice. Anyone can run with the ball. You have to be an effective tackler. In the end it's the tackle that separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls.
